Home Building and Renovating
Most new home extensions will usually entail a degree of renovating to the existing property. Home
building and renovating go hand in hand and must form part of the overall budget cost. Many homeowners forget
this aspect and simply focus on the new home building elements and forget the renovating element of
the works.
The division of costs between new home building an the renovating elements will vary between each project and
the home owners requirements. Renovating a property can be more expensive than new building works simply due to the
extra labour element usually required together with the preparation before anything can be replaced.
As a guide, we would estimate that when extending a home, it would be a good idea to allow 25% of the budget
cost for the new build to be put towards the renovation of the existing structure. Forget to prepare for this
element of the construction works and you will end up with a half finished project where the new works are let down
by the condition of its host building.
